Sailing courses

Optimist sailing courses

Sailing lessons are available at It Wiid in July and August and the May holiday. We hold courses in optimists, which are ideal sailing boats for young people up to 12 inclusive.

Children are taught the basic principles of sailing: paddling with lee board, steering, rigging boat, lying up, capsizing etc.

Each course consists of four daily sessions of two hours each: from 10.00 to 12.00 mornings or 13.00 – 15.00 afternoons. There are six to ten boats on each course, with one or two children in each optimist and two instructors.

Sailing lessons are never cancelled, even in rain or bad weather; theory lesions may be given if necessary. Children must hold swimming certificates and wear rainwear.

Day by day program – optimists

Day 1, Monday
Today, you learn how to scull the boat, and we learn how to rig out the optimist. We also all go out sailing on the lake by the Y field; you sail a figure of eight and tack. At the end of the lesson, we put everything away again, so you learn how to take down the rig again.

Day 2, Tuesday
From today, you rig your boat yourself, and we go sailing around the buoys in a competition. We may even capsize if the weather’s nice!

Day 3, Wednesday
On day three, we set sail on the great water and sail off in a sleep. You re-rig the boat afloat and we’ll sail around the buoys on the large lake.

Day 4, Thursday
On the last day of the course, we repeat what we’ve learned so far. You can even capsize once more quickly if you like! At the end of the lesson, you will get a certificate.

Falcon sailing courses

For students aged 12 and over, we give courses in polyfalcons. These sailing boats are gaff-rigged, with a sail area of 16 m². The Falcon is 6.65 m long and 2.00 m broad, with a draught of 0.85 m. These are highly stable, safe boats for learning. Each course comprise four three-hourly sessions once daily, from 09.00 to 12.00 in the morning or 13.00 – 16.00 afternoons. Each boat holds four students plus one instructor. Lifejackets and rainwear must be worn during sessions. During the Falcon lessons, students learn the basics of sailing: rigging out, setting up, steering, sail settings, etc. You can also put all your family in one Falcon (up to four people), but they must be aged 12 or over.

Segelkurse Valk

Daily programme – Falcon

Day 1, Monday
We start by learning to rig out the boat. You learn what things are called: what is a boom, gaff, jib, mainsail, skirts etc. Then we sail away, everyone taking the rudder in turn. Today, you practice tacking (turning the boat) and the different courses.

Day 2, Tuesday
Crews start by rigging out the boat themselves. We repeat the courses from day one, and today, we also learn how to luff – coming out of the wind, close into the wind, jibing and tacking.

Day 3, Wednesday
After rigging the boat out ourselves again, we go sailing again and repeat the previous days. Today, you learn about upper winds, lower winds, high shore, low shore and alongshore.

Day 4, Thursday
Already, today is the last day of the course. We make a nice sailing trip, with the crew doing everything themselves. We repeat the most important things, and you have to tie up yourself.
